Springing Into Action

During the last couple of weeks our volunteers have been busy sprucing up some of Hedgemead Park’s structures.

Given its position under several large trees, the Grade 2-listed Victorian water fountain is subjected to falling leaf litter, dust and the odd bird dropping. So, from time to time, the Friends get out brushes and a low power jet wash to carefully clean off the worst of the detritus. It looks so much better, for a while!

And, near the Lansdown Road entrance, the park’s ‘rustic shelter’ often gets a bit grubby with litter and graffiti. The litter is removed every week by our litter-picking volunteers but in early February we decided to clean off the accumulated graffiti and remove ivy infiltrating the shelter’s roof tiles.

In other news, the Council’s Tree Team have given the park’s avenue of Lime trees a severe haircut. It’s about five years since the last time the Limes were pollarded, so they had got quite unruly in summer months. They look a little bare now but a good canopy of leaves will grow back very quickly.
